Sikora
He was born in 1948 in Warsaw into an artistic family. His mother was a painter and his father a sculptor. At the age of 20, he moved to Paris for a year, where he seriously pursued photography.
After returning to Poland, he worked for 10 years as a photojournalist for the illustrated weekly "Perspektywy." During this time, he also collaborated with leading Polish graphic designers, creating theater and film posters. In 1979, he created two large-format photographic projects: "Album" and "Alice in Wonderland," presenting a surrealist vision of the world. These projects were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art at the Centre Pompidou in Paris during the 1980 Youth Biennale. He then began exhibiting in other European countries and the United States. In 1982, he moved to Australia,
where he taught workshops at the Victorian College of the Arts. He then founded a commercial photography studio and continued his artistic career. Since 1986, he has traveled extensively around the world. From 1996 to 2006, he divided his life between Poland and Australia.
He has received numerous awards for his photography. To this day, he publishes 55 limited editions of his own books and exhibits his work worldwide. Since 1999, he has been working on the project "Transparency of Things," which has already been exhibited nine times and is constantly updated with new works. The first exhibition took place at the Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw. In 2001, together with Andrzej Świetlik, he founded the Homeless Gallery, promoting independent photography in many countries. Since 2002, he has been teaching photography classes. Since 2006, he has been implementing the project "Motion Photography," consisting of short animated films based on photography. Three series have been created: "Mr. Egg," "Woman," and "Heard in Silence." In the fall of 2008, Znak published the album "Tomek Sikora the Light-Sensitive," containing several hundred photographs and dozens of anecdotes by Tomek Sikora. In 2009-2010, he worked on the album "Chopin: The Composer's Moods in Tomek Sikora's Photographic Images," in which he depicted the Poland of his dreams. In 2011, he published the albums "Męskie granie," "Album," "Genius Loci," and the children's book "BajkoNurki," created by a group of more than a dozen artists. He also published the 365-page permanent calendar "Twarzowa Kolekcja." 2012 was the culmination of seven years of work on the 390-page album about the Paris metro, "213 km. under the Parisian stone." His most recent project, from 2014, includes the albums "Cztery po roku," "Minęła wiek," and "Istanbul – ulica fotografia." For detailed information about the photographs, please contact the gallery.
