This exhibition is another presentation of work by students of the Photographic Narrative Studio at the Faculty of Media Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. This time, I have invited young artists whose work, in my opinion, shares a common theme – recognition.
Recognition is understood as a set of means and actions necessary to obtain data about events and areas of the reality around us. It often also provides information about the condition of the subject. I believe that this term, bordering on military and medical, very aptly captures the nature of the discussions held in the studio about the imaging methods inherent in the mediums of photography and video. The duality of its application – one related to aggression, the other to providing assistance – reminds me of the power of the imaging medium, linked to the mimetic nature of photography. Of the breadth of interpretation and the possibility of framing issues in a new context.
This offers the opportunity to reinterpret seemingly obvious situations and elevate the banal beyond the context of everyday life. To discuss them within the context of visual representation and discover a new, unusual function for a seemingly familiar element.
