BEATA ORLIKOWSKA

Zapach zapamiętany

Beata Maria Orlikowska is celebrating the 25th anniversary of her artistic work this year with great activity and creativity. In May, the Koszalin Cultural Center hosted the exhibition "Afterimages," a summary of her work. This fall, from November 14th to 28th, the prestigious Ney Gallery & Prints in Warsaw will host the finale of the artist's latest project – an exhibition titled "Scent Remembered." It promises to be an exceptionally interesting event, with distinguished guests in attendance.

The project is extraordinary. It combines sensory experiences with unique means of artistic expression. It connects famous figures and their intimate, small worlds with the name of this extraordinary artist. Her idea of "translating" their olfactory memories into porcelain paintings has captivated many people from the worlds of literature, art, culture, and business. Among them are: writers KRYSTYNA KOFTA and OLGA TOKARCZUK, singer DANUTA BŁAŻEJCZYK, actresses BARBARA BURSZTYNOWICZ and MAŁGORZATA FOREMNIAK, LIDIA POPIEL and photographer MAŁGORZATA NIEMEN, photography artists, MARTA SIEMBAB, the only independent sensualist (connoisseur of scents) in Poland, MAŁGORZATA WRÓBLEWSKA-BLIKLE, associated with the famous Warsaw confectionary "Blikle", MAREK KAMIŃSKI, polar explorer, traveler and writer, honorary citizen of Koszalin, as well as famous Koszalin residents: EWA TUROWSKA, cultural animator, BOGDAN PLOMIN, journalist and landscape designer, and RYSZARD ULICKI, writer (author of, among others, "Kolorowe Jarmarki"). The main sponsors are POLSKIE FABRYKI "ĆMIELÓW" and "CHODZIEŻ" S.A., with which Beata M. Orlikowska has been associated since the beginning of her artistic career. INGA KAMIŃSKA, President of the Management Board of the Factories, also accepted the invitation to participate in the project, sharing her memories related to the theme "Scent Remembered."
PERFUMERIA QUALITY MISSALA, known for selling elite, niche fragrances available exclusively in the most luxurious and carefully selected locations worldwide, joined the project as its substantive patron. Present in the Polish and European exclusive perfume markets for almost a quarter of a century, it enjoys a well-established reputation as a dynamically developing Polish family business. The founder and co-owner of Perfumery Quality, STANISŁAWA MISSALA, is the author of the olfactory memories that inspired the creation of the first painting in this endeavor. The project is under the honorary patronage of the Mayor of Koszalin, the artist's hometown. Beata Maria Orlikowska is the creator of dozens of large- and small-format porcelain paintings. She is one of the few artists in Poland who utilize unique oxide techniques dating back to the Chinese Ming and Tang dynasties. Paintings on porcelain are just a portion of her oeuvre, but perhaps her most important. Besides their delicate linework, they are distinguished by their richness of subject matter: from architectural depictions (Old Polish manor houses, pre-war tenement houses, street fragments) and seaside landscapes, through portraits and nudes, to abstractions.

It was this growing passion for abstraction that led Beata M. Orlikowska to the "Scent" project. Abstraction is an emotion. Smell is also an emotion. "I'm interested in other people's emotions," the artist writes in her project credo. "That's why I ask people I know and respect from the worlds of art, literature, and business about their 'remembered scents.' I seek inspiration for my work in their stories."

These encounters resulted in a series of works that open up a new dimension in the artist's practice. The exhibition, alongside the diptychs, will feature framed texts that have become the source of her creative explorations. The resulting diptychs are imbued with an immense dose of energy flowing from deep states of human consciousness. The sensual beauty of primal sensations, combined with the fleeting beauty of memories evoked by scent, creates a unique atmosphere for the viewer. It can be the beginning of reflection on what is important to each of us in life, an opening to new challenges...
